OnMonday,Abbott,aRepublican,directedtheTexasDepartmentofPublicSafety(DPS)to“enhancepublicsafetyandhomelandsecurityoperations”acrossTexas.HesaidthesurgeisinresponsetoescalatingcartelviolenceinMexicothathebelievesposesagrowingthreattoAmericancivilians.
“Mexicandrugcartelsposeasignificantthreattopublicsafetyandnationalsecurity,”saidAbbott.“Byincreasingproactiveeffortstodefendagainstcartelviolence,Texaswillcontinuetoutilizeeverytoolandstrategytoprotectourstateandournation.”
Hevowedthatinthefaceofincreasedcartelviolence,“WewillnotcowertocriminalswhoimposeterroronourfellowTexansandAmericans.”
