FIRSTONFOX:Aleadingeducationwatchdoggroupreleasedareportthisweekallegingthatastate-fundedteacherpreparationpartnershipinMinnesotaexplicitlylimitseligibilitybasedonrace,possiblyinviolationoffederallaw.
AccordingtoareportreleasedbyDefendingEducation,theMinnesotaEducatorsPartnership(MEP),acollaborationbetweenMSUMankatoandseveralsouthernMinnesotaschooldistricts,operatesmultipleteacherpipelineprogramsthatarerestrictedtoBlack,IndigenousandPeopleofColor(BIPOC)applicantsdespitebeingfundedwithtaxpayerdollarsthroughtheMinnesotaDepartmentofEducation.
Thepartnershipinquestion,accordingtothereport,received$1.5millioninstategrantsin2023aspartofMinnesota’s“GrowYourOwn”(GYO)program,whichwasdesignedtorecruitandtrainteacherstoworkthroughoutschoolsinthestatewiththegoalofdiversifyingtheteachingworkforce.
