U.S.RepJohnJames,viewedbysomeasthefront-runnerintheracefortheGOPnominationtobeMichigan’snextgovernor,won’tparticipateWednesdaynightintheprimarycampaign’sfirstdebate,organizedbythestateRepublicanParty.
JamesspokeswomanHannahOsantowskeissuedastatementaboutfourhoursbeforedoorswerescheduledtoopenfortheeventinSparta,contendingthatpollingandfundraisingnumbersindicatedthecongressmanfromShelbyTownshipwas“thefavoritetobecomeMichigan’snextgovernor.”
“JohnwillconsideraprimarydebateoncethefieldissetandwillbespeakingdirectlytoMichigandersinthemeantime,”Osantowskesaid.
OnMonday,James,asecond-termU.S.HousememberwhopreviouslyranfortheU.S.Senatetwice,reportedraisingabout$1.38millionfromJuly21throughOct.20,morethananyothercandidateforgovernordidfromdonors—notincludingpersonalloans—overthattimeperiod.
